Cherry and brown butter waffles are a great way to start the day. The nutty taste of browned butter goes so well with the sweetness of cherries that they taste like heaven. For an extra special breakfast treat, put maple syrup and whipped cream on top of them.

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, browned and cooled
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cherries, pitted and halved
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Whipped cream optional

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt

In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and then whisk in the buttermilk, browned butter, and vanilla extract

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined

Be careful not to overmix; its okay if there are some lumps

Gently fold in the halved cherries into the batter

Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturers instructions and lightly grease it with non-stick cooking spray or a bit of melted butter

Pour the waffle batter onto the preheated waffle iron, using the recommended amount for your specific waffle maker

Close the lid and cook until the waffles are golden brown and crisp

Carefully remove the waffles from the iron and place them on a serving plate
