Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef chuck
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 4 slices of rye bread
- 4 slices of Swiss cheese
- 4 tablespoons butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Thousand Island dressing optional
Instructions:
Make 4 patties out of the ground beef that are all the same size
Add salt and pepper to both sides
Add 2 tablespoons of butter to a skillet or griddle that is already hot over medium-high heat
Put the patties in the pan and cook for three to four minutes on each side, or until theyre done the way you like them
Put a slice of Swiss cheese on top of each patty in the last minute of cooking and let it melt
Take the patties out of the pan and set them aside
Add the thinly sliced onions to the same skillet with the last 2 tablespoons of butter
Saut for about 5 to 7 minutes, until the onions turn caramelized and golden brown
Toast the rye bread slices a little while the onions are cooking
Put one patty on a toasted rye bread slice, then add caramelized onions on top of it
Finally, cover it with another rye bread slice
If you want, you can spread Thousand Island dressing on one side of the last few slices of rye bread and add them on top to finish the sandwiches
Put the patty melts back in the pan after putting them together and cook for two more minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy
Serve your patty melt hot and enjoy it
